Being pretty unfamiliar with batch files, I'm not sure of the functionality available, but there are two main scripting methods on OS X which are similar: AppleScript. AppleScript is a scripting language which lets you control OS X and many applications.
A batch file on a Mac is just like a batch file on a PC.. just a text file followed by a series of commands. Except on a Mac, it's generally called a shell script. I'm no expert here, but you'd put the following on the first line:
#!/bin/bash
- The text file as executable (rather than give it a specific suffix). This is how OS X does it. However, OS X adds the feature that if you give the file the suffix.command, Finder will run Terminal.app to execute it (similar to how BAT files work in Windows). Unlike MS-DOS, however, UNIX (and OS X) permits you to specify what interpreter is used.
